The True story of the Little KKK Girl In the Nirvana Heart Shaped Box Video

The Little “KKK” Girl In The Nirvana “Heart Shaped Box” Video

In 1993, Nirvana filmed their award winning video for the release of the “Heart Shaped Box” single.

At the time, the little girl in the video was rumored to be Cobain’s younger half-sister from his mom’s side named Breanne (Brieann) O’Connor.

Robin Sloane (video supervisor) went to Seattle to meet with Kurt and discuss promotional plans for In Utero. According to her, “Kurt had developed a complete storyboard. The poppy field had drawn it beautifully. ' Soon after, Kurt and Courtney asked Danny Goldberg and Rosemary Carroll if Katie, their three-year-old daughter, could play a blonde girl dressed in the Ku Klux Klan costume, they refused and finally the girl Kelsey Rohr was chosen.

Here is a screen grab of the innocent little “KKK” girl in the video.

A few people contacted me over the years to let me know that the little girl in the video is not Breanne but rather a girl from Southern California named Kelsey Rohr.  I reached out to her a few years back but never received reply for official confirmation but now we have official confirmation from Kelsey herself via her Instagram.  She posted a selfie of herself with Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl along with this quote:

“Today Dave Grohl and I picked up right where we left off 23 years ago on set of Nirvana’s last music video “Heart-Shaped Box”. Today reminded me that I peaked at 6 years old BUT I was the most badass kid on the playground. Today was the absolute coolest. Or in Dave’s words seeing each other today was a “historic moment”! What a legend!!”
