WATCH: The Day Talyor Hawkins remembered how Nirvana changed his life

-Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has spoken in an interview with Beats 1's Matt Wilkinson about how he thought his overdose years ago could spell the end of the band. Also what he felt the first time he heard Nirvana's “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, among other things.

Seeing Nirvana on television for Hawkins was something of a revelation:

“We sat and waited for MTV to watch videos…here it is! I was like, 'Fuck!' It was literally the same moment every kid in America had when The Beatles played Ed Sullivan."

"I literally remember where I was and the color of the outside light changed... I don't know if they knew what they were doing when they made 'Nevermind' but they made a perfect record, pristine and yet reckless and amazing."

“And then his response to that was to do something less pristine and more guttural. But the guy [Kurt] just couldn't help but write wonderful, amazing melodies, unforgettable lyrics and the band was also very."

Hawkins suffered a heroin overdose while traveling in London in 2001 that left him in a coma for two weeks and he thought he might take down the Foo Fighters.

“I was going out a lot. I wasn't like a junkie per se, but I did party a lot. There was a year when the parties became too heavy. Thank God, in a way, that guy gave me the wrong line with the wrong thing one night and I woke up going, 'What the fuck happened?' That was a real change for me.”

-After that, Dave Grohl started playing with Queens Of The Stone Age, for what Hawkins thought "looked like the end".

"We tried to do 'One By One' and it really felt like the end. I don't think glamorizing that lifestyle is a good thing. I do not do it. I think it's a bad message."

Regarding his current affiliations, Hawkins has also expressed his desire to play drums with Liam Gallagher, write a song for him. He has said of Liam that he is “a character”, but for good, he wants to collaborate with him.
