Watch: The epic and unknown version of "Something in the way"

-"Something in the Way" was believed to have been written during the time when its author, singer Kurt Cobain, was homeless and sleeping under the Young Street Bridge in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. This myth, propagated by Cobain, was disproved in 2001 with the publication of Cobain's biography Heavier than Heaven, written by Charles Cross, which claimed that he would have been carried away by the tide of the Wishkah River if he had spent a night there. In reality, Cobain spent his time sleeping in friends' houses, cardboard boxes, abandoned apartments, and town hospital waiting rooms.

The song was written in 1990, as it was first played at The Off Ramp Cafe on November 25, 1990 in Seattle.

According to Nevermind producer Butch Vig, Cobain's original plans were for the entire band to record the song, but when early attempts at this failed, Cobain performed the song for Vig to show him what it should sound like. Vig was impressed with the sound of the performance, and after turning off the studio's air conditioning and phones, he turned on the microphones and recorded the song the same way. This part became the most important part of the track; drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic later added their parts, though both had some difficulty with the song's slow pace.

Novoselic also had trouble tuning his bass to the pitch of Cobain's guitar (an old Stella 12-string acoustic guitar with 5 nylon strings rarely known in tune) and Grohl had to give up his familiar drum-heavy style. so that the song would get a soft sound. On the last day of the recording sessions, Kirk Canning, a friend of the band, supplemented the song with a cello melody, although he too had difficulty tuning his instrument on Cobain's guitar.
